In Practice: Ask the experts - What is a parent champion?

1 min read
To encourage greater parental involvement and consultation, local authorities are now required to ensure that the parents of children at poorly performing schools are consulted in plans to turn the school around.

To help them achieve this, local authorities, or school proprietors, can now appoint a "parent champion". This person will be independent of both the local authority and the school but sufficiently experienced and skilled to act as the broker between parents and the local authority or proprietor.

The aim of having parent champions is to ensure good communication between the school and parents. They make sure parents are informed of the local authority's plans, ensuring they understand the issues and have an opportunity to offer their views.
