In Practice: Ask the experts

1 min read Early Years
I work in a children's centre and have been asked by parents how they can access financial support for childcare. Any advice?

A good place to start would be to contact the local authority's family information service, which can provide information on the types and availability of childcare. The working tax credit (WTC) has a specific element to support working parents to access registered childcare, for parents that work more than 16 hours per week and are on a low income. Depending upon your circumstances and eligibility WTC can contribute up to 80 per cent of childcare costs. There are weekly limits to what can be claimed. Parents can visit www.taxcredits.inlandrevenue.gov.uk for further information on eligibility.

Further support for childcare once children reach three years is the three- and four-year-old entitlement to 12.5 hours of free early education a week, for 38 weeks a year with a registered provider regardless of income or circumstance.
