In Practice: Ask the experts

Q: I work in a centre based in a community with a high immigrant population. How can we ensure that we communicate with families with the number of languages that are spoken?

While migrant families should be encouraged and supported to learn English, translation services are often an important way of supporting their short-term needs. Professional translators can be costly.

Some centres draw on volunteer workers from these communities and extended family members of those who attend the centre. Find out if your team has untapped skills and, when recruiting new staff, consider hiring people with language skills.

Do try and access funding for translation services. A regularly updated list of funding opportunities and grants can be found at www.fit4funding.org.uk. There may be a small fee but funding may cover a variety of services for your centre.
