In Practice: Ask the experts

1 min read Early Years Youth Work
Q: I'm a youth worker and I know the Healthier Children, Brighter Futures national framework has just been launched - how will this help me within our centre?

A: As a youth worker, you are a good role model for health-promoting behaviour and by incorporating health issues into every session you will heighten awareness of ways to be healthy. If your session is around DJing for instance, you could discuss drugs and alcohol. Or if the session is around music, talking about the effects of smoking on the voice would be an example of a health-promoting activity delivered in a session in which the young people are engaged and interested.

Practical session plans and ideas can soon be found at www.makespace.org.uk. The National Youth Agency have more information about the strategy at www.nya.org.uk, and the You're Welcome Standards can be found at www.dh.gov.uk.
