In Practice: Ask the experts

1 min read Early Years Education
Q: I can't find any childcare after 4pm for my 10-year-old. I have rung the children information service and asked what is provided at my local school but they don't do childcare. What should I do?

A: Your local authority would have done an audit of demand and supply looking at the needs of older children. This should be out for consultation so look on its website to see what it says are the gaps in your areas. The report should also set out any plans to improve provision. Ask around your friends and neighbours to see if anyone is in the same situation as you. If you can show that there is a need they may be able to work with your local school to look at its after-school activities. These may be run later or the school could be linked to a leisure centre or another school so that children would have a choice of things to do after school.
