A: The first thing is to find out what services the local communityneeds and what already exists. A local survey and consultation should beable to identify any gaps and then you can start to look at how they canbe filled. Extended schools go far beyond simply providing more thingsby themselves. Many schools are forming partnerships with other schoolsto work in clusters and with private and voluntary sector providers.Many of the extended activities in schools are already run by externalbodies, and it makes sense to build on these while formalising thearrangement through partnership agreements. The school will still have aresponsibility to ensure that children and families have access toextended services and that they are good quality, but the partnerorganisations will manage activities on a day-to-day basis.
