In Practice: Ask the experts

1 min read
Q: We have a permanent Travellers site within our community and we would like parents and children to feel welcome in our children's centre. We have tried leafleting and visiting families but as yet few come to the centre. What else can we try?

A: For some communities using new services even when they are very closeby can seem daunting. Often, Travelling families will be linked intospecialist staff who will be working with them, for example on theirhousing, wider education needs and options. Try and establish whatspecialist services are available on the ground in your area and workwith these staff to develop a plan to include families. Perhaps youcould spend some time with them on site? It may well be that anintroduction from people who families already know and trust willencourage them into the centre.

Q: We are keen to ensure parents play a full role in planning andevaluating services. But despite our efforts, few parents have attendedour board meetings. Do you have any suggestions?
