Homelessness: Hidden homeless could raise figures

The Government has come under pressure to commission a census of the "hidden homeless" that could add thousands of young people to official figures.

The Parliamentary committee that scrutinises the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister made the call in a report into homelessness. It said a census of the hidden homeless would enable local authorities to make "more useful assessments of the scale of the problem".

Youth homelessness charity Centrepoint welcomed the proposal. Chief executive Anthony Lawton said: "Research shows that there could be up to 52,000 young people accepted as homeless by local authorities, but many more thousands are likely to be hidden from official statistics."
