Numbers game: Homelessness

1 min read

In 2004-05, 10,560 young people aged 16 and 17 and care-leavers aged 18 to 20 were accepted as having nowhere to live by local authorities, compared with 3,150 in 1997-98. The numbers steadily increased during this period and reached a peak in 2003-04 when 11,050 young people were registered as homeless. Young people accounted for nearly one in 10 of all those accepted as homeless in 2004-05.

Despite the increase, youth homelessness charity Centrepoint said the findings did not provide a full picture of the problem as those who are homeless but not accepted as such by the local authorities aren't included in the figures.
