Number of young homeless people ‘three times the official figure'

1 min read Youth Work
The true number of young people who are homeless is more than three times the number government figures suggest, youth homelessness charity Centrepoint has claimed.

A study commissioned by the charity, conducted by the University of Cambridge, found that 83,241 young people between the ages of 16 and 24 relied on charity and council support in the UK between 2013 and 2014.

This is more than three times as many as latest statutory homelessness figures compiled by the Department for Communities and Local Government from local authority data that puts the figure at 26,852.

Researchers say the discrepancy is due to the government statistics only recording the number of homeless young people local authorities have a statutory duty to house.

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland this only includes those in “priority need”, such as under 18s, care leavers and young parents.

Additionally the statutory figures only include those that have become newly homeless, excluding those that had already been homeless at the start of the year.
