Healthy Care: More than just a check up

While most people would connect health with being physically well, the Healthy Care initiative is making sure children in care are also looked after emotionally. Asha Goveas reports.

Three years ago, when Sian was 15, she was on her fifth foster careplacement, didn't see her birth family and was having a difficult timeat school. One thing she enjoyed doing, though, was cooking curries.After participating at a Healthy Care pilot session in Telford andWrekin, a cooking club for looked-after children was set up and itquickly became popular with the young people who ran it.

Having staff listen to her and help her develop her talents made amassive difference to Sian's life, she says. "When I went out and didthings like the club, it helped me to channel all the stuff in my headinto what I was doing," she reveals. "So when I went to school, I wasmore able to focus and concentrate."
