67% of children aged 14 affected by tooth decay in 2002/03 in Birkenhead (49 per cent in England and Wales)

50.6 pregnancies per 1,000 girls aged 15-17 in 1998 (46.6 in England)

45.7 pregnancies per 1,000 girls aged 15-17 in 2002 (42.6 in England)

6.6% of babies born under 2,500g in 2002 (7.7 per cent in England)

Karina Klause, consultant in dental public health for Birkenhead and Wallasey Primary Care Trust and Bebington and West Wirral Primary Care Trust, said the trusts' strategy to improve oral health included raising awareness and encouraging dental registration. The three main aspects of the strategy are to reduce the sugar in a child's diet, to encourage brushing with a fluoride toothpaste and to encourage regular dentist visits.
