63.1 conceptions per 1,000 girls aged 15 to 17 in 1998 (46.6 in England)

9.1% of live births under 2,500 grams in 2002 (7.7 per cent in England)

5.5 infant deaths under one week per 1,000 women in 2002 (5.2 in England)

Marietta Evans, head of public health programmes, said: "Sunderland Teaching Primary Care Trust has taken a broad approach to reducing teenage pregnancy.

This has involved paying particular attention to sex and relationships education. We have a Condom Card scheme with over 4,000 young people registered.

The trust has also worked to ensure that contraceptive services are available at locations across the city."
