HEALTH NEWS: Health Stats - Western Isles

25.9 pregnancies per 1,000 13- to 19-year-olds 2002 (42.6 in Scotland)

4.1 infant deaths per 1,000 live births 2002 (5.3 in Scotland)

2.8 instances of cleft palate per 1,000 births 1997-2001 (0.79 in Scotland)

4.2 Down's Syndrome babies per 1,000 births 1997-2001 (1.22 Scotland)

The Western Isles has had the lowest teen pregnancy rate among Scottish health boards for years. While there are cultural factors operating in the islands, the lower rates may result from the work of the board's sexual health strategy. However, the board recognises levels may be under-reported.

Latest figures for cleft palate and Down's Syndrome suggest a higher rate than in Scotland. However, the actual numbers are very small.
