7.4 infant deaths per 1,000 live births in 2002 (5.3 in Scotland)

1.46 children with Down's syndrome per 1,000 births between 1997 and 2001 (1.22 in Scotland)

77 conceptions per 1,000 girls aged between 16 and 19 in 2000 (69 in Scotland)

53% of children without tooth decay in 1999/2000 (45 per cent in Scotland)

A spokeswoman from NHS Fife said: "Our aim is to give all children, particularly those in vulnerable circumstances, a good start in life. Levels of dental decay in Fife have tended to be better than average in Scotland but still remain high. During 2002/3, every pre-school child in Fife should have received a free toothbrush and tube of toothpaste before their first birthday. A large proportion of local nurseries also offer supervised toothbrushing."
