Although the infant mortality rate in Tameside is slightly higher than average, the perinatal mortality rate, regarded as the most sensitive indicator of obstetric care, is lower.
The Tameside and Glossop PCT is building on this by asking for 25m from the Strategic Health Authority to be spent on upgrading children's and maternity departments.
Following discussions with local women it is also considering the development of midwife units.
