The perinatal mortality rate is the most sensitive indicator of obstetric care. For developed countries the rate for babies weighing more than 1,000g is usually less than six per 1,000 births, whereas for developing countries it ranges from 30 to 200. The rate in Strabane is more than double that of its local health authority, the Western Board, which has a rate of 7.2.
