7.29 deaths of children under one per 1,000 live births, 1999-2001 (England & Wales 5.6)

8.64 babies per 1,000 born weighing less than 2500g, 1999-2001 (England & Wales 7.6)

76.1 conceptions per 1,000 under-18s, Shipley East 1992-97 (England & Wales 46, in 1997)

53% of five-year-old children have tooth decay (England & Wales 40 per cent, in 2001/2)

Teenage pregnancy rates are high in Shipley East (76 per cent), compared to 23 per cent in Baildon. The PCT aims to reduce the gap in teenage conception rates between the worst fifth of wards and the average by at least a quarter. Although the PCT admits that fluoridation of water helps to prevent tooth decay, Bradford does not fluoridate its drinking water.
