HEALTH NEWS: Health stats - Plymouth

131.2 per 100,000 under-5s admitted to hospital for serious accidental injury (length of stay more than three days) (England 93.4)

9 conceptions per 1,000 under-16s (England and Wales 8.2)

6.9% low birth-weight (less than 2.5kg) (England and Wales 7.9 per cent)

4.3 infant deaths in first year per 1,000 births (England and Wales 5.4)

Much of Plymouth has poor health status. Its injury rate was calculated from 17 admissions over 12 months. Statistically, this is not significantly different to England.

Teenage conceptions have reduced in the past three years as a result of agencies addressing the determinants of health, not just the symptoms.

Primary care teams and advice are partly responsible for fewer instances of low birth-weight and infant deaths.
