- 9.2% of babies weighing less than 2,500 grams at birth in 2001 (7.9 per cent in England & Wales)
Dr Pui-Ling Li, director of public heath in Waltham Forest, said: "We are concerned about low birthweight and the high level of premature deaths in infants, and are currently investigating the likely causes. Waltham Forest PCT is already promoting and developing healthy living programmes. There is also a lot of joint work with the council and local voluntary and community groups including Sure Start."
