- 2.2 infant deaths per 1,000 live births in first year of life in 2003 (5.3 in England and Wales)
- 4.6 conceptions per 1,000 under-16s in 1999-2001 (8.2 in England)
Dr Ali Round, director of public health at the East Devon Primary Care Trust, says: "We're working on a range of initiatives designed to improve services for children. The creation of public health teams will mean that support for children from birth throughout their school years is more co-ordinated and effective. We continue to support teenage mums, and run regular groups across East Devon where young mothers can talk to each other."
