Health News: Commissioning - Use of voluntary sector encouraged

1 min read
A Government report on health service commissioning should encourage closer working between the NHS and children's charities, NCH said last week.

The Department of Health's Third Sector Commissioning Taskforce's reportsaid primary care trusts and local authorities must consider longer-termcontracts and a fair approach to commercial risk when commissioningservices from voluntary organisations.

Children's charity NCH said the report's recommendations should lead toimprovements in joint working between health and children'sservices.

Clare Tickell, chief executive of NCH, said: "From our perspective wehave some very good links in some areas, particularly with SureStart.

We have spectacular buy-in from local health service professionals butthat is not uniform. That is why this is such good news.

"Having the buy-in from the centre hikes the profile of the third sectoras a key partner in delivering services. The Department of Health hasled the way and there are a number of other departments like theDepartment for Education and Skills setting up equivalents (to thetaskforce)."
