Voluntary Sector: Commissioning for change

6 mins read
The Government wants the voluntary and statutory sectors to work together to commission services, but this is not always easy in practice. Mark Johnson explains.

Coming to terms with bereavement can be a particularly traumatic experience for young people. But for children in Dudley, in the West Midlands, a project run by the local Children's Fund programme is there to help them deal with their emotions.

Children's Fund project workers take children away from their family setting to give them time to take part in provided fun activities or discuss their feelings.

If required, staff also introduce young people to a specialist children's counselling service, run by Bramble's Trust, a Worcestershire charity.

This commissioning of services to specialist voluntary agencies such as Bramble's is an example of how the Government wants agencies large and small, statutory and voluntary, to work together to commission and deliver services.
