One of the biggest awards was made to the Okuyamba project, delivered by youth charity Skilltrain. The Wandsworth-based project was granted 178,000 over three years to recruit and train volunteers to befriend 11- to 17-year-olds. The bilingual volunteers help young people with little understanding of English to understand the school environment.
The project has been running for three years, and was devised by a young Somali refugee living in the Wandsworth area of south London. Okuyamba volunteers last year helped around 70 young people in Wandsworth.
Other grants include 156,000 for the Redbridge-based Frenford Club for Young People to develop social skills through sports; 141,000 for Homestart Sutton to provide carers, counselling and mentors for young people with phobias, learning difficulties or experience of mental cruelty; and 92,000 for the Roundhouse Creative Centre in Camden to help young people develop self-awareness and confidence through performing arts.
