GRANTS: Commonwealth projects get funds

The Commonwealth Youth Exchange Council is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Department for Education and Skills and independent fundraising. It is offering grants for groups of up to 13 young people, plus two leaders, all aged between 16 and 25.

For projects taking place in 2004, the council will fund up to 40 per cent of each project's outgoing international travel costs. The council will either pay 7 per incoming visitor per day during their programme in the UK, or make a contribution of up to 40 per cent towards a visitor's airfares.

Vic Craggs, chief executive of the council, said: "The value of work that breaks down barriers between young people from different backgrounds is clear."
