Things to do - Organise a trip abroad

2 mins read Youth Work
Enduring a long-haul flight with a dozen sleep-deprived young people may sound like hell, but the pros of organising a trip abroad far outweigh the cons.

John Newsome, 20, has taken part in several expeditions to Tanzania with Rotherham Young People's Services, including one in October. He confesses that before spending time abroad he found it difficult to embrace other cultures. "A trip like that changes the way you see things," he says. "Every one of us came back a better person and feeling much more confident in our own abilities."

The whole process from start to finish was young person-led, which gave the group a sense of ownership over the project. The young people were also involved in group-building activities from an early stage to help them to work together as a team.
