Activity Ideas: Things to do - Go on a sailing trip

2 mins read Youth Work
The image of sailing a boat on the open seas is often associated with the very wealthy. However, groups such as the Tall Ships Youth Trust and The Cirdan Sailing Trust are making access to this activity easy and affordable to young people.

Chas Cowell, Tall Ships Youth Trust's youth development and training manager, believes sailing trips provide young people with a valuable opportunity to learn life skills. "They learn to tie knots, read navigation equipment and become knowledgeable in both basic sailing and big boat sailing," he says.

Should young people wish to further their sailing experience, they'll receive assistance from the trust in finding a local sailing club so they can continue sailing. Young people can also be recommended to become a volunteer with the trust and further their sailing skills and gain further accreditation.

The trips cost from £89 for a day trip and up to £1,000 for a cross-Atlantic expedition. The trust offers financial support as well as volunteering opportunities to cover part of the cost.
