Fiveways Play Centre, Brighton

1 min read Early Years
What's happening? Children and members of the community are helping Brighton & Hove Council to build an environmentally friendly Sure Start children's centre.

Why? Fiveways Play Centre was previously housed in a 34-year-old pre-fab, which desperately needed replacing. Brighton & Hove is replacing and improving some of the older nursery and pre-school buildings in the city to offer improved experiences for children.

How? The building will benefit from south-facing windows to keep it warm in winter and shading to prevent overheating in the summer. It will have natural ventilation and lighting to contribute to a bright and healthy learning environment. It will also recycle rainwater for use in the garden, use low-energy lighting and have a "green" roof covered in sedum plants, which will improve air quality and attract wildlife.
