The project has been awarded an early years capital grant of £90,000 to spend on refurbishing the playroom, installing children's toilets and a disabled toilet, and creating a terrace to allow the children to play both indoors and out.
What services are available? The centre offers a playroom and childcare support, plus benefits advice and volunteering opportunities for parents. There are currently 120 children enrolled in the facility. Specially trained staff support a number of children for whom English is their second language.
How is it going? The centre has supported hundreds of underprivileged members of the community so far and received encouraging feedback from Ofsted. "It's vital that the most excluded residents in the city are supported," says councillor Vanessa Brown, local cabinet member for children and young people. "Improved facilities like these mean parents can consider all their opportunities in the knowledge that their children are playing happily".
