Education White Paper: Davies says Every Child Matters could be abandoned by schools

1 min read
A respected director of children's services has warned that the Government's latest education reforms could give schools carte blanche to opt out of the Every Child Matters agenda.

Christine Davies, director of children's services at Telford and WrekinCouncil, was concerned that last week's education white paper could undomuch of the progress made in the past few years by giving schools arange of extra freedoms.

"Schools should be at the heart of the Every Child Matters agenda andthat means working with all services and agencies to support children inthat local community," she said.

"If schools interpret the white paper as saying that they don't actuallyhave to have much of a relationship with local authorities, andtherefore all the other services and agencies for children, that willmean that schools are no longer at the heart of the Every Child Mattersagenda. I don't think that is the Government's intention but if schoolsinterpret it crudely then that's what will happen. That would be aretrograde step."
