Education News: Education bill - Fears for Every Child Matters agenda

The Government has been warned that its new Education Bill could seriously undermine the Every Child Matters agenda.

Schools minister Andrew Adonis was forced to listen to a string of attacks after he used his maiden speech in the House of Lords to set out the main components of the Bill, a week after it was unveiled in the Queen's Speech.

In the first parliamentary debate on the new legislation, Lord Adonis said: "(The Bill) will make it easier for good-quality providers of education, including successful state schools, to replace failing schools and to establish new state schools in response to parental demand on the basis of fair all-ability admissions and fair funding."

But Liberal Democrat Baroness Walmsley said planned measures to increase the number of foundation schools would take power away from directors of children's services.
