Every child matters: Direct Schools Grant may be redirected

1 min read
Education secretary Alan Johnson has raised hopes that millions of pounds currently spent on schools could be redirected towards other parts of the Every Child Matters agenda.

Johnson told delegates at the National Children and Adult ServicesConference in Brighton last week that he was keen for the Direct SchoolsGrant to be spread more widely.

He indicated that he would be lobbying chancellor Gordon Brown to changethe rules. If he is successful, children's services directors will havefar more money to spend on initiatives such as school nurses and familysupport.

Responding to a question from the floor after his speech, Johnson said:"There is certainly an issue about how we allow access to the DirectSchools Grant. It's actually something we wanted to talk about in theComprehensive Spending Review. I hope it's something we can sort outthrough the Comprehensive Spending Review."
