Speaking at a House of Commons debate on the draft Special Educational Needs and Disability Order, Trimble said he also feared children with moderate learning difficulties were "being encouraged to attend mainstream schools without specialist units, which could be to the detriment of the children".
However, a spokeswoman for Northern Ireland's Department of Education denied there was a policy to "phase out" special schools. She said the Order would strengthen the rights of children with special educational needs to enter mainstream education.
