Education News: Special schools - IT system to stretch kids' imaginations

Pupils at special schools in Northern Ireland are to benefit from a new IT system designed for children who are non-verbal and severely physically disabled.

The CameraMouse system enables pupils to move their computer cursor via movement of their eyes or any other part of their body over which they have voluntary control.

It was launched at Parkview School in Lisburn, and was originally developed by Boston College, Massachusetts.

The Northern Ireland Executive Programme has provided funding of 200,000 for the system, which will be put into action across 26 special schools.

Jane Kennedy MP, Northern Ireland's minister with responsibility for education, said: "I know from meeting the children that the only limitation will be our imagination."
