Education News: Special educational needs - Schools urged to improve monitoring

1 min read
Schools are being urged to bring in new systems to ensure they are tracking the progress of children with special educational needs.

The National Association of Special Education Needs is pushing for all schools to bring in P-scales, which are assessment criteria for progress below level one in the curriculum. The eight-scale grading enables schools to measure the progress of children with special educational needs.

To encourage schools to make use of P-scales, the association has produced national guidelines on how to use them. With the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, it has also produced a DVD showing how they can be used.

Chief executive Lorraine Peterson said: "At the moment it is used predominantly in special schools. What we are trying to do is make sure that all mainstream schools are using them for those children who need them."
