A new report by Ofsted calls on mainstream schools to ensure thatspecialist teaching is available for all pupils with SEN. It has beenseized on by campaigners who hope it will pave the way for a nationalreview of specialist support services in mainstream schools. Last week'sreport is based on visits to 74 special schools, mainstream schools andpupil referral units.
It says that pupils with SEN can make "outstanding progress" in bothmainstream and special schools.
But inspectors say that too many mainstream schools are relying onteaching assistants and that pupils are less likely to fulfill theirpotential where this is the case. The report states: "The provision ofadditional resources to pupils - such as support from teachingassistants - did not ensure good quality intervention or adequateprogress by pupils."
