A new group of schools were awarded specialist status in special educational needs (SEN) last week, as the Government came under pressure to change the way that children are assessed for a statement of SEN.

As a result, the 15 special schools have joined the specialist schoolsprogramme, each covering one of the four practice areas set out in theSEN Code of Practice.

The Government wants 50 specialist SEN schools in place by 2008. The SENspecialism was first introduced in September 2005 with the launch of 12trailblazers.

Dawn House School, which caters for children with severe communicationdifficulties, will focus on communication and interaction. The schoolwill receive 340,000 over the next four years. Head teacher AnneJordan said: "This confirms the quality of our work and will help us toachieve higher levels.
