Education News: Special educational needs - Ministers have to pushfor reforms

A fresh push by ministers on special educational needs (SEN) reform is needed, says a report by an education think tank.

An Institute for Research in Integrated Strategies' report said theGovernment should form a ministerial review group made up of children'sprofessionals to revive momentum.

The report's author Dr Rona Tutt said: "The 2004 SEN strategy needs tobe pushed forward since there has been a succession of ministers andsome of it has not been carried forward."

Recommendations made by Parliament's Education and Skills SelectCommittee also need to be implemented, she added.

The report, All Inclusive?, also suggests the Government should createsystems that cater for the individual needs of children rather thanfocusing on the divide between mainstream and special schools.
