A report by Parliament's influential Education and Skills SelectCommittee will say that the Government "urgently needs to takeadditional steps" to address the shortfall. The committee's keenlyanticipated report on special educational needs is not due until laterthis week, but Children Now has obtained a key chapter.
The leaked chapter shows that committee members have grave concerns thatthe national shortage of educational psychologists is hamperingjoined-up working and leaving thousands of children without access toappropriate support. MPs are concerned the problem will get much worseas a result of changes to the training route, which will see theexisting one-year masters course replaced with a three-yeardoctorate.
The report will say: "Educational psychologists have a vital role toplay in moving towards truly joined-up services for children. TheGovernment should reconsider how the new training route for educationalpsychologists is funded to ensure that a sufficient number and calibreof professionals are being supported in their training.
