Education News: Special educational needs - Adonis under pressureover academies

1 min read
Junior schools minister Lord Adonis will this week come under heavy pressure to explain why some academy schools appear to be turning away children with special needs to drive up exam results.

MPs on Parliament's Education and Skills Select Committee will grill theminister about figures obtained last week by Children Now, which showthat the percentage of children with special educational needs hasfallen at some of the best performing academy schools (Children Now,15-21 March).

The figures have already caused widespread concern among specialeducational needs campaigners and now the committee has seized onthem.

"(The figures) are interesting and worrying. We have Adonis before thecommittee this week and we will be asking him pertinent questions aboutthese figures," said the committee's chair, Labour MP BarrySheerman.

"We have already got it on the briefing so we will be making sure wegive him a grilling. They are worrying and I want to get some morebackground on why this is happening to see what the logic behind it is.I want to find out how he responds to these figures and then we can seehow we go."
