Education News: Special educational needs - Frustration at refusal to review policy

1 min read
The Department for Education and Skills has frustrated the children's sector by refusing to conduct a fundamental review of special educational needs policy.

Junior schools minister Lord Adonis was pressed on the issue when hegave evidence to Parliament's Education and Skills Select Committee lastweek.

MPs on the committee told him there was widespread support foroverhauling the current system, but Lord Adonis insisted: "We need to beconvinced that fundamental reforms are what is required to improveoutcomes for children."

However, he did admit that the current system could be improved. "Iwould like to see less variation in outcomes," he said. "The issue isthe most appropriate intervention to get to that goal. If we believeminimum standards are the best way to get that goal we would look at itvery carefully."
