Education News: Special educational needs - Frustration as major changes ruled out

Ministers have agreed to make minor changes to the special educational needs system but have frustrated campaigners by ruling out root-and-branch reforms.

The Department for Education and Skills last week published its responseto a damning report published by Parliament's Education and SkillsSelect Committee four months ago (Children Now, 12-18 July).

The Government has accepted a number of the recommendations made by MPson the commit tee. It will work to strengthen the role and status ofspecial needs co-ordinators (Sencos) in English schools and develop"nationally accredited" training for those newly appointed to therole.

The Government will also address concerns that schools are relying onteaching assistants to do this job by bringing in a requirement thatSencos must be fully qualified teachers. And there will be "nationalprogramme of continuing professional development" to transform theunderstanding of special educational needs and different types ofdisabilities in schools.
