Children Now can reveal that the Department for Education and Skillsintervened earlier this year after the City of London Academy refused totake a child. It follows concerns that schools in the 5bn academyprogramme are turning away children with special needs in order toimprove exam results (Children Now, 22-28 March).
A senior official at the DfES told Children Now: "There has only beenone occasion on which the secretary of state has directed the admissionof a child to an academy. That was on 23 March 2006 when the secretaryof state directed the City of London Academy to admit a child withspecial educational needs."
Campaigners for disabled children welcomed the Government'sintervention, which followed a tribunal hearing. But they also expressedconcern that the academy had turned away the child in the firstplace.
