Special needs: MPs set to unveil education report

Parliament's Education and Skills Select Committee was preparing to unveil its hotly anticipated report on special educational needs as Children Now went to press.

The report, due to be published tomorrow (6 July), is expected to seizeon widespread variations in special educational needs provision indifferent parts of the country. MPs on the committee are understood tobe concerned that pupils with very similar needs have different levelsof support depending on where they live. The report will demand theGovernment takes action to address the situation.

But sources say the Labour-dominated committee will not back theConservative Party's campaign to end the closure of special schools.Instead, the report will say that some children with special educationalneeds can thrive in mainstream schools, provided they receive outreachsupport from special schools.
