Education News: Special needs - Parties clash over special schools

Labour and Conservative politicians clashed last week over the future of special schools.

It comes as both parties put forward proposals to ensure betterprovision for children with special education needs.

Schools minister Lord Adonis last week announced a new test to ensurespecial schools cannot be closed unless better alternatives exist. Healso revealed that mandatory training of school special educationalneeds co-ordinators would be piloted next year. This will apply to allnew co-ordinators from 2008.

But Conservative leader David Cameron called for a freeze on specialschool closures. Speaking at a conference on special educational needs,he said: "It is a shame the Government rejected our amendments to theEducation and Inspections Bill for a moratorium on the closure ofspecial schools."
