Northern Ireland: Policy to address lack of play space

1 min read
Half of children living in some districts in Northern Ireland do not live close to a play facility.

A consultation on a new play policy for the province found that in fourcouncil areas - Armagh, Craigavon, Down, and Newry and Mourne - 9,000 to12,700 children did not live within 400 metres of a play facility orsomewhere that could be converted into one. In five other areas -Belfast, Lisburn, Derry, Fermanagh and Dungannon - 7,000 to 9,000children did not live near a play facility.

The consultation, published by the Office of the First Minister andDeputy First Minister last week, said play policy should be based onrecognising, respecting and resourcing play.

It said there must be regional quality standards for play provision'standards and procedures for organisations gathering data on play, areassessment of issues of risk in relation to play, and a workforcedevelopment plan that includes play. It also stressed the importance ofinvolving children in play policy.
