Northern Ireland: Politicians urged to prioritise play

Northern Ireland's politicians are being urged to make children's play a priority once the new assembly is elected.

A manifesto published by PlayBoard last week sets out a range ofpolicies to improve play services in the province. PlayBoard hopes theNorthern Ireland Executive will adopt the policies once it formsfollowing elections on 7 March.

Policies endorsed by the play charity include: earmarking 2m fromthe Children and Young People's Fund for play services; requiring allprimary schools to give children a lunchbreak lasting at least one hour;and the creation of teams of play rangers to help protect children whenthey play outside.

PlayBoard said that its proposals would help reduce childhood obesity,crime and anti-social behaviour.
