The data on schools' current "value added" measures considers how pupils' exams results have improved between the ages of 11 and 16.
Pupils were given a score based around 1,000 in the new-style rankings system. In special schools the average score was 1,013 but in comprehensives the figure dropped to 984.
Grammar schools faired only slightly better than special needs schools with a score of 1,021 while independent schools achieved an average score of 1,034.
Chris Darlington, head of St Hugh's Secondary Special School in Lincolnshire, and former president of the National Association for Special Educational Needs, said: "This is another indicator that special schools are working very hard to ensure that their students progress."
