Education News: League Tables - Special schools top value addedleague

Pupils at special educational needs schools are among the most improved in England, according to the latest school league tables.

Together with this year's GCSE league tables, the Department forEducation and Skills has released "value added" scores that measure thedifference each school makes to the performance and school life ofpupils between the ages of 11 and 16.

The figures show that all four types of special educational needs school- community, foundation, non-maintained and independent - smashed thenational average score of 989 with an overall score of 1,050.

Of these, independent special schools performed the best with a score of1,089, with community special schools, which are run by localauthorities, achieving a score of 1,017.

This is in contrast with the Government's flagship academy schools,which recorded a below average score of just 969.
