Statistics on the school workforce in England in 2006, released by theDepartment for Education and Skills last week, reveal a vacancy rate of1.4 per cent in special schools. London finds it the most difficult tofill posts in special schools, with three per cent remaining vacant.
This compares to vacancy rates in primary and secondary schools of 0.4per cent and 0.6 per cent respectively.
A spokeswoman for the DfES said: "We recognise that recruitment will bean additional challenge in special schools because of the extra trainingand skills that are needed."
The DfES is funding a 1.1m programme to enhance both specialeducational needs and disability training.
